Orgasm during childbirth

Orgasm during childbirth

No woman forgets the pain she experienced during childbirth. Even if the vast majority suffer until the baby is born, there is a minority who show a certain degree of enjoyment for a certain time during labour. A priori, midwives witness the existence of orgasm during childbirth. Few women are willing to accept it. But scientific research confirms this. How is this possible? Does this phenomenon have a rational explanation?

How to explain orgasm during childbirth?

Women who have already given birth often speak about the pain they had to overcome during this painful and joyful event. Most of them also claim that this temporary pain dissipates when they get in contact with the baby, but no one mentions this mysterious orgasm.

Although this phenomenon is uncommon, some scientific theories have tried to explain it and prove its existence. Known for its complexity, childbirth often requires psychological preparation focusing on building the woman’s confidence. In some cases, they manage to overcome frustration, resist better and feel something else.

From a scientific point of view, this orgasm is the result of the effect of hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins. And these latter make this part of the body particularly sensitive to touch. In addition to the baby’s head rubbing against the vaginal wall, the actions of these hormones create an orgasmic reaction for the woman in labour.

A scientifically proven fact

A lot of midwives have reported having detected the presence of orgasms in some of their patients, even if they refuse to acknowledge them. In order to clear the air, Thierry Postel: a clinical psychologist and sexologist, resolved to conduct an investigation on this subject.

To do this, the doctor asked more than 1000 midwives and delivery attendants to participate in this study. Among the respondents, one in 10 health professionals agreed to answer the surveys they had been asked to answer. To obtain a reliable estimate, the sampling was made on more than two hundred thousand deliveries.

After the analysis of the outcome, the statistics proved that pleasure during childbirth remained a fact. Thanks to this study, there is statistical data related to the orgasm at the moment of delivery.

Orgasm during childbirth and the numbers

Currently, few women who have had this unique experience are willing to share their experiences. In addition, data collected during the midwifery survey indicate that this situation only apply to a minority.

The analysis of the figures showed that 3 out of 1000 women experience this orgasm when giving birth to their child. However, this magnitude may be higher, as most of them prefer not to say a word about this experience for fear of being misunderstood. In 2013, 0.3% of women experienced orgasm during childbirth and 668 cases out of 206,000 observed cases showed signs of orgasm.

Although minimal, the responses of those who agreed to provide evidence revealed that the intensity of the orgasm varies from one woman to another. It can be more or less strong depending on the sensitivity of each woman. Measured on a scale of 1 to 10, the value ranges from 7.8 to 8.3.

An orgasm can relieve the pain of childbirth

In some countries, particularly the United States, orgasm is used to relieve the pain of childbirth. Clinicians even encourage their patients to engage in pleasurable activities to better resist the pain of childbirth.

The idea being to alleviate the pain associated with the pushing, women themselves induce orgasm in order to facilitate the expulsion of the baby. This action is intended to stimulate the secretion of endorphins and to relieve the mother. This way, the effect of contractions and release is less noticeable.

Even if some women perform instinctive massage movements, others voluntarily trigger this sensation to cope with the pain. It should also be noted that this soothing is only possible during a natural childbirth. In addition, women who give birth under epidurals do not need it.

Orgasm during childbirth: a taboo subject?

Some women decide to keep this fact secret only because it is considered a taboo subject. Although many specialized pages encourage testimonials, the idea of introducing yourself and share your experience does not seem obvious. Some people feel disgust at the thought of knowing that their mother may have had pleasure during childbirth.

The meaning of the word orgasm leads some people to sexualize the ecstasy of childbirth. Yet scientists say that pleasure can happen even when we are eating, when the environment allows it and the pleasure is present. Thus, the association of this particular experience with an inappropriate, even sexual, meaning is entirely a mistake.
